Founder. Yogi. Mum of three. Muse.
Amy Carmody radiates the kind of energy that instantly lifts a room and it’s no surprise she’s built a movement platform that does the same. A devoted yogi, style lover, and mother to three (including a brand new baby girl), Amy is the founder of Amy Carmody Movement, a wildly popular online space that champions intelligent, feel-good movement for real life. In this conversation, we sit down with Amy to talk motherhood, mindset, and how she juggles growing her business while raising three little ones - with grace, grit and her signature glow.
Running a business while raising 3 kids is no small feat! What inspired you to start your business?
Since I was 19, I was both passionate and content to become a yoga teacher and personal trainer while the majority of my girlfriends set off to conquer the corporate world. It's all I've ever wanted to do because it brings me so much joy. I was teaching & coaching full-time all over Melbourne for a decade before the pandemic hit, so I had an incredible community already. I jumped online immediately because I couldn't imagine not teaching every day. Five years later, I'm practising with people all over the world & it still blows my mind.
Work-life balance can feel like an impossible ideal - how do you personally navigate the juggle?
The work-life balance lines are constantly blurred when it's your own business: laptops in bed, answering messages on your phone when you should be present, working past midnight. It's even more challenging to set healthy boundaries when you love what you do & don't mind working every day. Once I got out of the 'start-up' foundational years, I became more diligent with having weekends, leaving my laptop in the office, and having specific schedules for when I post on Instagram.
I also try not to juggle. It benefits nobody when we try to wear every hat. I ask my husband for a lot of help every single week. I've softened into the experience of motherhood, which is so fleeting, and I don't want to miss it. So, I'm happy for my business to be small yet mighty while raising young children.
Motherhood often teaches us skills that translate beautifully into leadership. Are there any lessons from parenting that have made you a better businesswoman?
I found the first year of motherhood incredibly challenging. I was utterly unprepared for how birth trauma would influence my parenting and the lack of control I felt over how my day would pan out. I've learnt in motherhood, slowly but surely, that if I am dysregulated in my nervous system, it not only makes parenting feel so hard, but the children also struggle to co-regulate. If I can first cater to my needs and bring myself into a more parasympathetic state, everyone in the family unit benefits.
In business, we are constantly challenged and rattled with stress. I'm firey and quick to react, so the lessons of motherhood have, thankfully, translated well. I work hard to be an empathetic businesswoman yet stand strong in my boundaries, too.
You’ve created a brand that reaches people all over the world. What are you most proud of when you reflect on your business’ impact?
Because it's my own brand and business, and we are an ultimately small yet mighty community, I can be truly myself with no filter. When I hit 'record' to film my classes, I show up exactly how I feel that day.
I was on Facetime with one of my members' husbands last week, as he's dealing with ongoing back pain. At the end of the call, he said, 'Thank you for making me feel seen, Amy.' Those words sum up what I'm most proud of with my business; I genuinely hope I help people feel more seen and heard.
What does your morning routine look like? How do you set yourself up for a productive day?
I don't have an inspiring answer to this. We wake up with one of the little people between us; on a rare night, if nobody comes wandering into our bed, my husband and I will have a quick morning cuddle. Then, it's a shot of aloe vera juice and soy piccolo made by my husband (yep, I drink coffee on an empty stomach), Vegemite toast, kids' lunchboxes, uniforms and shoes, all while cartoons are on the TV. I have a quick shower, a smoothie or some PB toast, and once my husband leaves with the boys, I head into my home studio and record a class or workout for my platform.
What does your evening routine look like? How do you set yourself up a restful sleep?
I take a shower to rinse off the day and my night-time skincare. I jump into bed and watch whatever series my husband & I are watching (or I get stuck into one of my spicy novels), then we scroll hilarious memes & send them to each other until I'm falling asleep (everyone does this, right!?) But regarding restfulness; magnesium, ashwagandha, and no work talk once we are in the bedroom. When I'm not pregnant, I try to use our sauna every night; it makes me sleep so well!
Do you have a favourite way to unwind or carve out ‘me time’ in your schedule?
I am a nicer person, a better wife, and a calmer mum when I have my 'me' time. For me, that's a sauna or a hike - something completely separate from work and, ideally, where nobody can reach me. We live right next to an incredible state forest, so the days I get out for a big hike are a chance for me to unplug from the matrix, breathe in fresh air, and remember what it feels like to be a human-being, not just a human-doing.
If you could go back and give yourself advice in your first year as a mum, what would it be?
All the habits you're so scared they're 'forming', they will categorically not be doing them at 16 years old. The bed-sharing, the dummy, the toddler milk bottle, the holding their hand or breastfeeding to sleep...none of that lasts. Do what you need to do to survive but also completely cherish it.' The first-time mum in me constantly smiles at how much more relaxed I've become as a parent.
What are your top 3 tips for movement during pregnancy?
1. Continue strength training to maintain muscle mass and improve ligament & tendon support. We lose muscle mass in postpartum due to our physiology prioritising other important factors like producing milk, and our hormones are not conducive to maintaining muscle, so it's key to continue during pregnancy if possible. Resistance training will also support tissue density relative to diastasis-recti and recovery from birth, it can support pelvic adaptations & minimise pelvic girdle pain and keep you feeling more physically capable to withstand the major anatomical changes we go through via pregnancy.
2. Continue training your core. It's a myth that we must stop 'all core' or abdominal-based movements. In my prenatal program, I try to educate and inform women as much as possible about their options and how to modify or when to modify by empowering them with more knowledge. All women's capabilities, anatomy, pressure management, and alignment vary, so move with an instructor who really understands perinatal fitness.
3. You absolutely will not feel like exercising every day. Nor do you have to. But try to get into the habit of showing up for yourself, even on those ridiculously rough days. Exercise is not just a means to support your physical health but a massive support system for your mental health during pregnancy. This is my job & passion, and I often had days where I didn't want to either; my advice: enjoy a Coke Zero and give it a crack; 99.99% of the time you'll feel better!
